VOLUNTEERS
DW is organised and run entirely by volunteers. One of the challenges we face is to find the several hundred people required each year to run the race. We always need new people to assist with a range of tasks. Here are some examples of what we require.
Checkpoint crews – record the time and numbers of boats passing through checkpoints and report them to Race Control.
Campsite crew – assist with the organisation of the campsite for the 4 day race.
Marshals – control the movement of supporters at particular points along the course
Westminster – we have a big operation that feeds paddlers and looks after the safety crews operating on the Tideway as well as marshalling spectators in the finish area. For a brief synopsis of what happens at Westminster, click here.
Organisational team members – people prepared to assist throughout the year with the race, whether in the context of publicity, finance, safety, communications or negotiating the necessary permissions to run the race.
Volunteering is a way of giving something back to the race for those who have done it in the past and also a way of familiarising yourself with it if you are thinking of doing it in the future. It can be great fun and very rewarding and many of the team come back year after year. If you are interested in helping in some capacity or want to learn more, please contact the Course Secretary.

DW MEMBERSHIP
The Devizes to Westminster Organisation Ltd is a limited company but rather than having shareholders it has members. It does not distribute profits so any surplus from the running of the event is held in reserve to cover future contingencies such as race cancellation. Everyone over the age of 18 who does the race in a particular year is a member and may vote at the AGM. Membership is also available to anyone on payment of a £10 annual subscription. |
