The DW Organisation is sorry to report that Mark (Foggy) Phillips, passed away on Saturday the 12th of August 2017 aged 56. Foggy was diagnosed in June with Sporadic-CJD which is a Prion disease completely random and fortunately very rare.
His athletic feats are legend and amongst these achievements, he was a 4 times winner of the Devizes to Westminster canoe race. Mark won the event in four consecutive years 94, 95, 96 and 97. This is only the 2nd time this has been done. In addition, he was 2nd 5 years later in 2002, completing his 6 races. Only 3 other people have won more times. His best time of 15:42 is the 5th fastest time for the race and only 8 minutes off the official record.
Lt Col Mark Phillips MBE, Royal Marines was a professional of the highest order - we will be hard put to meet his like again.

The DW Organising Team are fully aware of the incident that has taken place this afternoon on Westminster Bridge and the surrounding area. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
Regarding the race, at this time we will continue to progress plans for the normal running of DW over Easter Weekend. In the next 3 weeks we will adapt any plans as required by the security services, in response to today's incident, and will make announcements at the appropriate time.
In the meantime it is important not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding this incident, until such time as further information is released by the authorities.

DW2016 Proof of Age Requirements
6 Jan 2016 4:41 pm
For the 2016 Race, the DW Organisation have changed the rules requiring paddlers to show proof of age. It will no longer be required to show a photo ID at Devizes check-in, or at any time during the entry process. We have taken advice from British Canoeing, and their perspective is simple: it is the responsibility of the Paddler and/or Team Leader to ensure compliance with race rules. Severe penalties will be imposed for contravention of these rules. Please read the race rules.

UPDATE: PARKING AT DREADNOUGHT REACH
31 Mar 2015 7:25 pm
The DW Organisation has learned today (Tue. 31 March) that Wokingham Borough Council has delayed the planned works on the flyover into Thame Valley Park by one week.
As a result, parking suspensions will not be implemented on Thames Valley Park Drive over Easter weekend, and there will be no alternative parking arrangements in place.
So the good news is that it will be business as usual for Support Crews meeting their Paddlers at the Dreadnought Reach portage.
However, please ensure you park legally and follow the existing parking directions in TVP, as well as the relevant DW Rules for Support Crews - if you need a refresher then visit http://www.dwrace.org.uk/paddinforules.html!

Buoyancy Aid Rules
23 Feb 2015 12:17 am
Further to recent questions regards buoyancy aids/personal flotation devices, we've looked into the issue of ISO compliant items which apparently do not have 50N inherent buoyancy. Adult XL sized versions of these BAs/PFDs do meet that level to achieve compliance but some smaller sizes may offer just 45N. The organisers have decided that compliance with the relevant standards specified in the rules is the key here and that as long as they meet ALL the rest of the criteria specified in the rules, 45N versions of the BAs/PFDs will be accepted.

As announced, directors of the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race have met. In conjunction with advice from the Environment Agency, the directors have decided to run the DW race in 2013 in its normal format. However, due to the challenging nature of the conditions expected during the event, the organisers have implemented a self-assessment competence matrix for crews. All crews must assess themselves according to this matrix, which rates their ability to undertake the DW challenge in the current arduous conditions. Full details are contained in this document. Please note, the organisers reserve the right to stop any crew at any time. As advised by Owen Peake - Junior Campsite Manager:Please ensure that you have checked the weather forecast for Easter weekend - temperatures not currently looking good.Your crews who are camping MUST ensure that they are properly equipped with tents and sleeping bags that are appropriate for the conditions that are forecast.Pop up, single skin tents are not suitable for sub zero camping, nor are thin sleeping bags designed for festival goers in the height of summer. The campsite crew will not allow poorly equipped crews to stay on the campsite, and they are likely to be disqualified from the race for their own safety if they are deemed to be unfit to paddle. Please also ensure that your crews do not hang about at all after getting off the water - they should be sent straight to the showers and change into warm clothing, and not hang about chatting to parents and support crews unnecessarily.

Crews in the Stages race of DW (Junior doubles, Junior/Veteran doubles, Senior Singles, Endeavour) will not require lights affixed to their boats or light sticks attached to their buoyancy aids on the Tideway on Easter Monday this year. This is because the start will be around dawn.
We are aware there is great interest in conditions on the river after steady rain from the beginning of the year. We have been observing the conditions in recent months. We will continue to actively review the conditions and any possible impact on DW2013. At present, and unless otherwise announced on this website, it is expected that the race will be proceeding as normal. However, confirmation will be made in due course and should there be any changes they will be reported here as soon as they are known. At present we are planning to provide an update on Tuesday evening. Thanks and best wishes for final preparations.
Please note, compulsory kit will be ticked off at check-in. Please make sure it is packed in a way that can be checked. If you put it in bags, clink film, vacuum pack it in anyway, it will be opened.

DW2013 Entry Deadline - AMMENDED NOTE
10 Mar 2013 10:07 pm
The deadline for entries to DW2013 is fast approaching. Your online entry and payment must be received by midnight on Sunday 17 March.
However, as there is no post on Sundays this means in effect, the deadline for sending your payment is Friday 15 March if you are sending it in the post.
Alternatively, you can hand in payment in person at Waterside D to the Entry Secretary on Sunday 17 March. All payments must be with the Entries Secretary before he leaves Waterside D (he is normally the last to leave).
Ideally we would like to receive all entries online by Friday 15 March. While online entry will be kept open until midnight on Sunday for the few making last minute decisions, you are strongly advised to make your online entry well before that time. There is no paper entry and no late entries are permitted. Please make sure anyone you know entering the race is aware of this.
The procedure for DW entries being paid for at Waterside D is as follows:
1. Fill in your online entry and submit it, ideally, by Friday 15th March. But by Sunday 17th March at the latest.
2. Note the email address you used for both paddlers.
3. Write a cheque for the appropriate amount made payable to "Devizes to Westminster Organisation Limited" and write the e-mail address of both paddlers on the back of the cheque.
4. Hand in the cheque to the Entries Secretaries Desk (in the Waterside Centre at the finish).
Cash can be taken in payment of the fees but cheques are preferred. Card transactions are not possible.
To repeat for clarity, if you plan to decide on the day of Waterside D whether you are going to do DW or not, submit an electronic entry in good time earlier in the week. You are not committed to doing the race but all the entry details are there and you either hand in a cheque and get an entry, or you don't hand in a cheque and the electronic entry will not be used.
Note. Waterside Series Organisers are not involved with the DW entries so please direct entries to DW Oganisers not to the Waterside Series team. Thanks.

Thank you all for a great Easter!
DW 2016 was a challenging one, as storm Katie ravaged the country and wrecked the Westminster site, causing us to finish the stages race at Teddington for safety.
Fortunately 2017 was a relatively mild Easter in comparison, though low water meant it was unlikely many records would be taken. The mild weather was reflected in the number of finishers, with 88% of boats finishing the course.
With many paddlers returning with unfinished business, along with a boom in numbers due to the milder weather this year, we anticipated a lot more congestion and problems on the course. Fortunately with the majority of supporters attending our supporters briefings in the Wharf Theatre, the course ran a lot smoother than normal, so a big thank you to all of you!
The introduction to live tracking on every boat also helped streamline support and reduce congestion, also making it possible for folk to follow the race and their favourite crews from the comfort of their armchair, keeping the course free for supporters and emergency vehicles.
The results are live on the website, with all corrections made for penalties, tunnel delays etc, and as you've seen all over social media, first place in the senior doubles went to a deserving Jim King and Billy Butler, completing in 17hrs, 27 minutes, 37 seconds.
A special mention also has to be made to Sam Rippington and Lisa Price for taking the ladies C2 record in 24:11:02
The DW presentation will be at 2pm, Saturday, 10th June 2017, at Newbury Rugby Club, Monks Lane, Newbury, RG14 7RW
Next year Easter will be a tad earlier, on 30th March2nd April 2018, so start your planning now!
